RFID and NFC chip selection checklist
Start with the system requirements, then compare the exact components. Use this checklist to turn a catalog shortlist into a testable design decision.
| Decision | Questions to resolve | Resource |
|---|---|---|
| Reader and protocol | Which reader model, operating system and air protocol must work? Confirm exact command and tag type support; matching frequency alone is insufficient. | Build a shortlist |
| Application memory | How many encoded bytes are needed after headers, reserved areas and access settings? Separate EPC, TID, user and configuration memory. | Estimate NDEF space |
| Memory layout | Where are the UID, lock bits, configuration and sector trailers? Check writable regions before assigning an application layout. | Inspect memory maps |
| Identifier format | Which scheme, serial range and byte order does the receiving system require? Confirm a valid allocation separately from a valid encoding. | Validate SGTIN-96 |
| RF integration | Which antenna, mounting material, orientation, frequency and loss budget apply? Evaluate the complete tag and reader, not the IC alone. | Explore the link budget |
| Security and procurement | What threat must be prevented? Confirm authentication design, key handling, exact part revision, lifecycle, sample availability and qualification evidence. | Check the source policy |
Keep a design decision record
For each candidate, record the ordering code, official source URL, document revision and the page or table supporting each requirement. Mark missing evidence explicitly. Record reader firmware, antenna, power settings, tag mounting and the test environment when evaluating samples.
A suitable replacement must satisfy the application requirements and integration constraints. Similar memory capacity, frequency or marketing language does not establish interchangeability. Use comparison pages to identify questions, then resolve them against manufacturer documents and measurements.
For quantities, packaging and custom tag construction, use the inquiry form on the selected chip page. Include the intended application and the requirements that matter most.
