Engineering Brief

How the Monza 4QT Works

The Impinj Monza 4QT operates in the UHF 860–960 MHz frequency range, conforming to ISO/IEC 18000-63 (EPC Gen2). It uses passive backscatter modulation to communicate with RFID readers, drawing all operating power from the interrogating RF field. The chip implements the EPC Gen2 air-interface protocol for anti-collision, allowing multiple tags to be inventoried in the reader field simultaneously.

A distinguishing architectural feature of the Monza 4QT is its four independent antenna ports, enabling flexible antenna design options including dual-dipole, orthogonal, or switched antenna configurations to improve read reliability regardless of tag orientation. The chip employs Impinj QT (Qualified Tag) technology, which provides two separate data profiles—Public and Private—controlled via access passwords. The Public profile presents limited EPC data for general supply-chain visibility, while the Private profile exposes full memory access for authorized parties.

The flexible memory architecture includes EPC, TID (Tag Identifier), User memory, and reserved memory banks for passwords. The QT feature allows tag data exposure to be dynamically switched between profiles via standard Gen2 commands without requiring physical tag modification.

Application considerations

The supplied use cases indicate potential applications in supply chain operations and asset tracking.

Potential Supply Chain Considerations

  • _Item-level tagging where tag orientation cannot be controlled at read points
  • Scenarios requiring graded data visibility—public EPC for logistics partners, full data access for brand owners
  • Environments where antenna diversity improves read zone coverage

Potential Asset Tracking Considerations

  • Fixed-asset inventory where physical tag placement varies
  • Use cases benefiting from switched or dual-polarized antenna designs for orientation-insensitive reads

Programming & Integration Notes

The Monza 4QT is programmed via standard EPC Gen2 commands. Key operational considerations include:

QT Technology Operation

  • The ACCESS command followed by the correct password transitions the tag between Public and Private QT profiles
  • In Public mode, the EPC length and content may be restricted per programmed configuration
  • In Private mode, full memory banks are accessible

Memory Architecture

  • Memory is organized in standard Gen2 banks: Reserved (passwords), EPC, TID, and User
  • The TID bank contains a unique, factory-locked identifier
  • User memory availability varies by specific Monza 4QT variant; consult part-specific documentation for exact size

Antenna Port Considerations

  • The four antenna ports support flexible PCB antenna designs; port selection and matching affect read range and sensitivity
  • Impedance matching to each port should be verified for the specific antenna topology employed

Security Notes

  • Access password protection is required for QT profile switching and secured memory operations
  • The kill password enables permanent tag disablement per Gen2 specification
  • No cryptographic authentication beyond Gen2 access passwords is implemented

Buying Guide: Impinj Monza 4QT

When sourcing the Monza 4QT, confirm with the supplier or Impinj directly:

  • Exact part number and die/wafer revision, as QT memory configurations may vary by variant
  • Whether the specific variant includes the desired User memory size and QT feature implementation
  • Delivery form: bare die, wafer, or packaged strap; matching to your conversion process
  • Availability status and recommended migration path within the Monza 4 Series or to newer Impinj M700 Series products
  • Documentation revision for programming and antenna design guidelines
  • Sample validation procedures for read range and QT profile switching with your reader infrastructure
